 Only a Girl

Excitement filled her! It had been a wonderful day! She was engaged! Joseph was all she could have hoped for in a husband! He was a descendant of King David, quite a catch for a girl of her lineage! He was godly and kind, a humble, gentle man who loved her – and how she loved him! At last, he had asked her father for her hand. And daddy had said yes! There was much to be done in the year ahead!

Joseph had already shown her the plans for their house and his shop and had begun clearing the land. It would be a solid, warm structure and Joseph’s skills as a carpenter would ensure it would be filled with lovely furnishings! She would make it a cozy home! She smiled as she envisioned the rugs and tables, licked her lips as she thought of preparing delicious meals in her very own kitchen. Her mother had taught her well! She dipped her head, blushing shyly as she thought of the sleeping mat and soft, warm quilts she would make for them to share. Theirs would be a home filled with love and laughter and many children!

That evening, as she lay dreaming of Joseph, she was suddenly wakened by a bright light. Rubbing the sleep from her eyes, she looked to the foot of her bed and cried out in shock and fear! There stood a man, larger and more powerfully intimidating than any she had ever seen! Shining, he was clothed in the whitest of fabrics. “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!” Mary rubbed her eyes again, wondering where her dreams of Joseph had turned into this frightening vision, trying to make herself come awake. Shaking
