For you were called to freedom, brothers, only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love, serve one another.

The Joy of Serving

By Neta West King

Health Talents International (HTI) is a Medical Evangelism ministry that began in 1973 and is centered in Guatemala and has continued to grow every year. The staff is largely made up of Guatemalan Christians in conjunction with area Churches of Christ. It has grown over the years to include Mobile Medical and Dental Teams, Surgical Teams, Medical Evangelism Training, and the ABC Program, an education program for children.

In 2002, HTI dedicated Clinica Ezell in the town of Lemoa, located in the picturesque Guatemalan Highlands. It is supported mainly by Churches of Christ. The purpose of this ministry is to heal the body and the soul. A team of surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, ENTs, translators, and compassionate caregivers volunteer their talents and, at their own expense, come to serve these people who are in need.

One Wednesday night, Rich Harper, director of HTI, came to Central to tell us about this ministry. Ernie and I immediately decided that this was where we wanted to serve. So, for the last three years, we have gone to serve these people. We have no medical training, but we do want to give honor and glory to our Lord and Savior through serving Him. So, Ernie was trained to sterilize surgical instruments and has worked in that capacity for the last three years. I serve in giving care to the patients after surgery.
